Inverted Oriental Scale Unit
Overview
While checking out Unit weaves on M.A.I.L., I found the Inverted Oriental Scale Unit as submitted by ElementalDragon. This fun weave from the European, Japanese and Helm families is the inverted form of the Oriental Scale Unit. If you wish to try making this yourself, I recommend following this excellent tutorial by Chainmailbasket_com.
Materials
For the sample piece showcased in this post, I used two sizes of rings made by hand from 16 SWG Bright Aluminum wire purchased from The Ring Lord. The smaller rings have an ID of 5mm for an AR of 3.1. The larger rings have an ID of 10mm for an AR of 6.15.
Notes
The Inverted Oriental Unit weave is simple to understand and easy to create. It looks best when each pair of small rings forms a V
shape, though they tend to close since the weave’s structure does not hold them in place. As a unit weave, it works best as a charm, pendant, earring, or paperweight. The name appears to originate from its inversion of the Oriental Scale Unit. I believe it is considered inverted due to the single layer of outer rings instead of two, two layers of center rings instead of one, and small rings positioned outside rather than inside the center rings. While the weave has limited practical applications and its aesthetic appeal depends on how well the small rings stay open, its simplicity makes it worth trying.
