Oriental Scale Unit
Overview
I came across Oriental Scale by ElementalDragon on M.A.I.L. while browsing for interesting weaves to try. This member of the European, Helm, and Japanese weave families is an interesting unit weave similar to the Aura 3 Unit. I followed this tutorial by Chainmailbasket_com, and would recommend it to those who want to make the weave themselves.
Materials
For the sample piece showcased in this post, I used two sizes of rings made by hand from 16 SWG Bright Aluminum wire purchased from The Ring Lord. The smaller rings have an ID of 5mm for an AR of 3.1. The larger rings have an ID of 10mm for an AR of 6.15.
Notes
The Oriental Scale Unit is simple, both to understand and create. I find that it has a beautifully simple and elegant appearance. As a unit weave, it can be easily incorporated into earrings, bracelet or necklace charms, pendants, or even kept as a fun paperweight. While it isn’t very versatile, its ease of creation and aesthetic appeal make it worth learning, in my opinion.
